Having a balanced combination of both technical and artistic skill in photography turns an aspiring photographer into a well rounded one. This is not a hands-on workshop; it is a classroom open discussion workshop where we will study images from world renown photographers. The goal of this photography class is to understand artistic tools to help you discover your own personal style in photography.

In-Depth Exposure WORKSHOP

The In-Depth Exposure Workshop begins in the classroom with a 2.5-hour in-depth discussion of exposure. The concept of metering and exposure can be tricky, but once you have grasped the concept it will solidify everything you know in photography. In this workshop you will learn how to manage your camera's metering system and gain maximum control over your exposures. By understanding the depths of exposure and metering, you can creatively break outside the box to make dynamic lighting decisions that will help you solve any difficult lighting scenario. Afterward we will head over to the Cockrell Butterfly Center to practice the principles of metering hands-on. The butterfly center is the perfect place to put your knowledge to the test and encounter some beautiful subjects as well. Admission to the Butterfly Center Admission is provided for you. Free parking at the Butterfly Center is limited so you will be responsible for any parking fees you may incur. Buffalo Bayou at Night EXCURSION

This Excursion begins at the famous Sabine St. Bridge where we will have a gorgeous view of downtown Houston at sunset. Here we will encounter the challenges of photography at sunset at the light contstantly changes into dark. Once the sun is below the horizon, we will begin a stroll through the beautiful sidewalks along buffalo bayou. Photographying the nicely lit waterway, bridge ways of I-45 above us and the Aquarium Farris wheel. You will benefit from bringing a Wide angle lens (below 50mm), a tripod to help stabilize the camera for slow shutter speeds, and a remote if you own one. Parking at Sabine St. Bridge is limited so you should plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early to find parking and so we can all talk about our camera settings beforehand. Please arrive 20 minutes early to discuss camera settings. Since this is an outdoor event there is always a chance of bad weather. If we are rained out, this excursion will be rescheduled.

Kemah Fireworks EXCURSION

Let’s head down to the Kemah Boardwalk and take pictures of fireworks! The Kemah Boardwalk is a 60-acre Texas Gulf Coast theme park in Kemah, TX. Every Friday night in July, the Boardwalk presents a spectacular firework show over the Galveston Bay! We will use slow shutter speeds for stunning photos of Fireworks, so a tripod is a must have for this Excursion. Learn how to balance your shutter speed and exposure, overcome focus difficulties at nighttime and capture the best firework pictures. If you have a remote for your camera, this will be a great opportunity to test it out. A zoom lens with telephoto (above 50mm) is ideal, so you can adjust the zoom to fine tune the shot. Entrance onto the boardwalk is free. However you will most likely need to pay for parking. Please arrive 20 minutes early to find parking and so we can all talk about our camera settings beforehand. Since this is an outdoor event there is always a chance of bad weather. If we are rained out, this excursion will be rescheduled.

The Manual Photography Workshop is a one-day 3 hour lecture styled class teaching you the depths of Manual Photography. Understanding Manual photography is essential in truly mastering your camera and exposure knowledge to the greatest depths. This class seeks to fill gaps in your skill set and give you confidence through your knowledge in the inner workings of exposure control. You will learn what it takes to manually balance ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed & exposure. We will also cover the importance of “Stops” when gauging your exposures and deciphering lighting. The goal of this class is to understand how to completely manage your camera’s ISO, Aperture & Shutter Speed settings and how to use your knowledge to proficiently maneuver your imagery and exposure.

Studio Lighting WORKSHOP

The Studio Lighting Workshop is an all day, in-studio workshop where you will learn how to setup a home studio with your external flash attachment. You will receive a hands-on experience setting up light stands, backgrounds, booms, softboxes, snoots, gels and wireless flash triggers. Studio lighting equipment will be discussed and multiple basic lighting plots will be demonstrated. Through these lighting demonstrations you will learn the role each light plays in the studio and how to manually manipulate your camera, flash and a hand-held light meter for full artistic lighting control. Once we have set up and discussed the equipment, each student will take turns photographing multiple light plots. We will then take a 1 hour lunch break. The second portion of the class builds upon the knowledge gained in the first portion of the class. Here we will expand our creative knowledge by exploring the artistic and creative nature of light with advanced lighting configurations or "plots" and begin. You will also learn the functionality of different light modifiers and how to manipulate them for particular artistic lighting effects. The purpose of this workshop is to fill your stylistic arsenal with creative studio lighting knowledge so you can become a master of light.

Houston Cistern EXCURSION

The Houston Cistern is one of Houston's hidden gems that should be on your bucket list. Let's explore this retired waterway with our camera. Located near the Sabine Street Bridge, the cistern is a retire reservior that has been opened to the public. This beautiful structure is an impressive 1.5 footballs fiels in size. Get ready to use your tripod to take pictures of this dimly lit relic using slow shutter speeds. We will have 30 minutes to walk the entire length of the Cistern. Be sure to arrive 30 minutes early so we can talk about camera settings a nd be fully prepared. The tour lasts only 30 minutes, so we are limited on the amount of time we are allotted to take our pictures.

RCW Nursery Garden EXCURSION

RCW Nursery is a gorgeous plant nursery near Jersey Village and Cypress Texas that boasts some of the greatest selections of plants. The nursery grounds are beautifully decorated with a plethora of garden art, birds, a rose house, herb house, and more. This will be a wonderful opportunity to test out your metering and Aperture Priority skills for nature photography. You can also bring a guest so you can test out pictures of people with beautiful flowers decorating your background. If you have a reflector this can be a great occasion to use it. If you have a Macro lens this will be your best friend for capturing the most detailed shots of flowers and portraits. A 50mm lens also works very well if you do not own a macro lens. Please arrive 15 minutes early so we can all talk about our camera settings beforehand. Since this is an outdoor event there is always a chance of bad weather. Real Estate WORKSHOP

The Real Estate Workshop teaches you the ins and outs of Real Estate Photography. The first 2.5-hours of the Workshop is a lecture styled discussion on the use of camera settings, equipment, and composition techniques to achieve the best results. You will also learn how to overcome typical furstrations of bright windows, bad coloration, focus problems and exposure for indoor and outdoor shots. Once the lecture is done you will be given a 1-hour lunch break. The last 2.5-hours of class consists of a hands-on tutorial on how to manage your real estate photographs using 2 different softwares...PhotoMatix and Lightroom. If you come to class with your laptop and these softwares installed, you are welcome to get hands-on by taking part in actively editing pictures within these softwares. Here you will learn how to Merge HDR images in Photomatix to create dynamic exposures, and complete the final touches including basic brightness, contrast, cropping, and resolution adjustments to comply with HAR image upload standards.

The Outdoor Portrait Workshop shows you the necessary skills and techniques for beautiful outdoor portraits. Advance your skills to the level of a professional portrait photographer. The day begins with 3 hours of classroom education. Here you will learn to adapt your photography knowledge for deeper understanding of exposure, light styling, wireless flash and posing for dynamic outdoor portrait photography. After a 1-hour lunch break we will walk over to the Buffalo Bayou Park (a 5 minute walk) for a 2-hour hands-on photo shoot. This will be your opportunity to put your new found knowledge to work. Your instructor will be by your side to ensure you feel comfortable with your equipment, settings, lighting and posing.  At the end of the day, the instructor will retrieve a copy of the pictures you have taken so your images may be donated to the model.

The National Museum of Funeral History was founded in 1992 to collect and preserve the history of the the funeral industry, including how it began and how it has evolved over time. This will be a fascinating opportunity to photograph some interesting relics that go hand-in-hand with the spirit of Halloween. Houston Zoo Lights EXCURSION

During the holiday season, the Houston Zoo is illuminated with Christmas lights, carolers and vendors. This is a wonderful evening opportunity to explore the zoo at night and take pictures of Christmas lights. You will get the chance to test out your slow shutter speed skills to achieve some amazing night time shots. Don't expect to see any animals, since they will be asleep while all the festivities take place. You should definitely expect to bring a tripod with you and if you own a remote for your camera you can bring that as well. Tickets for entrance to the Houston Zoo Lights must be purchased online via the Houston Zoo website. Since this is an outdoor event there is always a chance of bad weather.
